Another Old Citizen Gone
Death of John Carroll Brent, Esq.
The community was painfully surprised yesterday to hear of the death of John Carroll Brent, esq, which occurred at his residence on Delaware avenue, near C street north. ..
The deceased was sixty two years old, a son of Col William Brent, for many years clerk of the Circuit Court and the predecessor of the late John A Smith. He was a graduate of Georgetown college, afterwards studied law and later accompanied his uncle, Hon Daniel Brent, consul general to Paris, to his post of duty, and for many years he was secretary to his uncle, and exercised the duties of consul. While in Paris he paid much attention to literature and the fine arts, and became not only proficient in reading and writing the French and other languages, but spoke many of the modern languages as fluently as his mother tongue…
About thirty years ago he became connected with the Washington National Monument Society, and up to the time of his death was its secretary. He was one of the founders of the Oldest Inhabitants' Association and its secretary, and a prominent member of the Young Catholic Friends' Society. Mr Brent married a daughter of the late Washington Young, (now deceased) and leaves one daughter, a young lady who graduated last summer at St Joseph's academy, Emmitsburg. The various societies with whom was connected will hold meetings to arrange for his funeral…

The Funeral of John Carroll Brent
The friends and relatives of the late John Carroll Brent last Saturday morning paid their sad final tribute to his earthly remains. The funeral was largely attended, and took place from St Peter's church, on Capitol Hill. ......
The following organizations, of which the deceased was a member were strongly represented : The Washington Monument Society, the Oldest Inhabitants' Association, the Young Catholics Friend Society, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and the Carroll Institute. The pall bearers were Admiral Powell, Major Lee, Thomas H Parsons, Dr J B Blake, Mr Watterson, Chris. Grammar, General Bingham, and Dr J M Brodhead. At the close of the service at the church the remains were conveyed to Mount Olivet cemetery for interment.
