Daughter of Sir John Gifford and Elizabeth Throckmorton.

Mary Gifford married Sir Richard Baker of Sissinghurst Castle in 1572. They had two daughters: Chrysogona (b. 1573) and Cecily (b. 1575).

A year after Sir Richard Baker's death in May 1594, Mary married Richard Fletcher, the newly-elected Bishop of London. Fletcher's first wife Elizabeth - the mother of their eight children - had died in 1592, and this second marriage of the new Bishop of London caused him to fall out of favor with Queen Elizabeth - a misstep the effects of which some believed may have helped bring on his sudden illness and death shortly afterward. The new union was to be a brief one, as Fletcher died in office in June of 1596.

In 1597, as her third and final husband, Mary married Sir Stephen Thornhurst, of Herne in County Kent.

She was buried in Canterbury Cathedral on April 26, 1609. Her husband Sir Stephen was laid to rest there on Oct. 16, 1616.
