President of Columbia. A member of the Liberal Party of Columbia, he served as president from 1 April 1 1837 to 1 April 1841. Prior to becoming president he served as Vice President of Colombia under the presidency of Francisco de Paula Santander from 10 March 1832 to 7 October 1832. He studied at the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé and Colegio de San Bartolomé receiving degrees in law. He was elected as a delegate to the Congress of Cucuta, and at age 27, and later he is elected as president of the congress. He was then mayor of the department of Boyacá between 1825 and 1826 and was appointed as rector of the University of Boyacá in 1828. In 1830 he served for a few months as governor of Cundinamarca , until appointed minister of finance, a position he held with distinction. He then became vice president, interim president, and then elected as president. He is best remembered for his economic and educational reforms. After his retirement from the presidency, he served as a university professor and Supreme Court Magistrate.
