On 3 November 1926, Charles Edward Cole was born in Spencer, Union Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Charles DeVant Cole and Ruby Inez Green Cole. Charles went to school for 6 years in Borger, Texas where he skipped the first grade. In 1943, Charles was the Class Valedictorian of Gloster High School in Gloster, Amite County, Mississippi. His family moved to Riderwood, Alabama soon after his graduation.

In 1943, Charles started his freshman year at the University of Alabama. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy while a student at the University of Alabama. Charles became a part of the Navy V-12 / V-5 Aviation Cadet Program at Howard College in Birmingham, AL.

On 3 March 1945, Charles Edward Cole and Barbara Lee "Pat" Sample were married in York, Sumter County, Alabama. In 1949, Charles and Pat moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where he worked for Witt Ice & Gas Company. Witt was purchased by the Cardax Division of Chemetior Corporation by 1959.
