Civil War: Company I, 19th Maine Infantry

William Henry Little, Jr., was born at Bremen, Maine. He was a 25-year-old resident at Bremen when he enlisted as a private on August 25, 1862, and was mustered into Company I, 19th Maine Infantry. Private little was hospitalized for disease at Washington, D.C., in late 1862. After recuperating he was returned to his regiment, where he was promoted to corporal in 1863. Corporal Little was wounded in action at Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia, on May 12, 1864. He was treated for his wound and returned to his regiment, where he was promoted to sergeant. Sergeant Little was mustered out April 26, 1865. Soon afterward he filed for a veteran's disability pension in Maine on September 19, 1865, and received application No. 89,608 and certificate No. 65,907. William married Martha Jane Davis (Apr 1845, Maine) about 1871 and made a home for several years in Bremen (1870, 1880 US Census). Sometime before 1898 William and Martha moved to Malden, Massachusetts, where William died. His remains were returned to Bremen for burial. Soon after William's death, Martha filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Malden on May 18, 1898, and received application No. 676,628 and certificate No. 470,283. Martha was still living at Malden in June 1900 (US Census).
