Lance Cpl. Thomas Echols of Shepherdsville, Ky., spent his childhood in St. Clair, moving to Sault St. Marie with his family as a teen. He later moved to Sheperdsville, with his family. He was a graduate of Bullitt Central High where he ran track and played junior varsity football and was also in the ROTC program. He once saved money for weeks to buy tickets for a University of Michigan football game. Even after leaving Michigan, Echols remained devoted to the Wolverines. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. His wife lived in Kentucky and was expecting the couple's first child in April. He was 21.
