MIDDLETOWN, Ind., July 31 - Delbert Richey, 10 years old, son of Peter Richey, a wellknown farmer living four miles east of here, was killed almost instantly Friday evening shortly after 6 o'clock when he ran in front of a touring car driven by Sheridan Fite, an employe of a local garage, Fite was driving slowly, coming from the fairgrounds. Young Richey with his little sister, Alberta, darted across the street behind one machine and in front of the machine driven by Fite, who saw young Richey, but too late to avoid the accident. The front wheel of the machine passed over his chest. He was carried to a nearby house and given medical attention by Dr. C. M. Stoute of Middletown, who was coming from the fairgrounds after officiating as a judge in the races.
Young Richey was killed within the very eyesight of his father and mother, who were walking back to the city. They had gone to the fairgrounds and the little fellow had walked on ahead with his sister.
A crowd of over 1,000 people, on their way from the fairgrounds, immediately congregated at the scene of the accident. Fite was in no way blamed for the accident as it was unavoidable. The machine was being used by a local garage, but is owned by Pha Wisehart.
