In 1900 he and his parents and four of his five surviving siblings lived in a place they were renting in Bloomfield, IN. His father worked as an engineer at a flour mill.

In 1910 he and his wife and their daughter lived in a house they owned, with a mortgage, in Richland Township, Greene County, IN. He worked as a coal miner.

In 1920 he and Lula and their two children lived in a house they were renting at 723 Main Street (East or West not recorded) in Bloomfield, IN. He worked doing general labor.

In 1930 the four of them lived in a house they owned on Mineral Pike in Richland Township. Their home was valued at $250, and they did not have a radio. He worked as an inspector at a furniture factory.

In 1940 just he and Lula lived in possibly the same house. Their address was given as Mineral Road, and their home valued at $600. He worked as a laborer at a furniture factory, with an income in 1939 of $650 for 36 weeks of work.
