Melba Faye Cook, 87, of Arkansas City, died Monday (September 5, 2016) at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday (September 9, 2016) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Parker Cemetery.
The family will greet friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Melba was born October 27, 1928, in rural Sumner County, Kansas, to Thomas Albert and Gladys C. (Wheeler) Ballinger. She was reared educated Portland and Havana, Kansas, graduating from Havana High School in 1946. She returned to Arkansas City after high school and married Arthur D. Cook on June 7, 1947, in Arkansas City. Melba worked as a nurse’s aid for the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital (SCKMC) and as a cook for USD 470. She and Arthur raised cattle and had small farm near Silverdale. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Arkansas City.
Survivors include a son Daniel “Kent” and wife Nioma Cook of ElDorado; daughters Vicki and husband Steve Harding of Salina, Kowanna and husband John Houk of Silverdale; a brother Max and wife Treva Ballinger of Augusta; four grandchildren Alex Cook, Carla Gardener, Chris Harding and Lauri Goheen; step-grandchildren Kim Mitchell, Laci Totten, Kristen Fox and Katie Houk; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and two sisters.
A memorial has established with the Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
