Sherman Lamar Hammond was the son of Pirn Johnson and Lola Gladys Williamson Hammonds.


FORT STOCKTON Sherman L. Hammond, 66, of Fort Stockton, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at the Odessa Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the Hammond Family Ranch Cemetery with Reverend Ernie Waggoner officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

Mr. Hammond was born on October 1, 1941, in Alexandria, Alabama. He married Nancy Mitchell on October 7, 1961, in Fort Stockton. He had lived in Fort Stockton since May 20, 1959. He was a local businessman and Rancher. Sherman was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, the Rotary Club, JC's, and a member Fort Stockton First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Fort Stockton Golf Association, and a member of the Blues Brothers Quail Association. He served on the Board of Directors for the Pecos County State Bank; and was past co-owner of the Child's Corporation.

Sherman was awarded the outstanding Lone Star Landsteward award for 1999-2000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; and a Land Stewardship Award for March 2000 from the Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Hammond; and a sister, Laverne Hammond.


The family request memorial be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch; the Fort Stockton Public Library; the Fort Stockton Historical Society; or to a favorite charity of your choice.
