Stephen Benya Sr., 85, died Oct. 1 at his residence.

Born in Czechoslovakia, he came to the United States in 1905, and lived in Barberton since 1927. He was employed at Babcock & Wilcox Co. 20 years, and retired from the Barberton City Utilities Department after 20 years of service in 1966. Mr. Benya was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church and the A.A.R.P. He was secretary of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 265, secretary of the Greek Catholic Union Lodge 425 since 1950, and in the 1940s, served as a Barberton Third Ward councilman for three terms.

He was preceded in death by wife, Katherina; and is survived by sons, Steve of Copley, David of Clinton, Michael of Wadsworth; daughter, Mrs. Martha (Richard) Skerl of Barberton; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren three stepgrandchildren; brother, Nick Benya of Barberton; sisters, Mrs. Anna Lukinac, Mrs. Mary Vemity, both of Barberton; half-brother, George Machek of Barberton.
