James Richard Ransom gave his life in service to his country. He was aboard the Belgian ship SS Leopoldville, sunk in the English Channel by an enemy submarine. His son had been born 3 days prior to the unfortunate incident, and they never saw each other in this life. A book has been written about this World War II disaster, "A Night Before Christmas" by Jacquin Sanders, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1963. It is Sanders who gives us the correct date of death. The ship was torpedoed on Christmas Eve and went down on Christmas Day.
