The son of John & Mary (Fincannan) Fertig, in 1860 he was a clerk living with his family in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. D, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He then enlisted in Mifflintown, Juniata County, July 25, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 1 as a private with Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry (44th Pa), eventually rising to the rank of 1st sergeant. Captured near White House Landing, Virginia, on June 21, 1864, he was incarcerated first in Richmond, then Lynchburg, Virginia, and paroled at Northeast Bridge, North Carolina, February 28, 1865. He is also on the prisoner list for the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, but his compiled military service records do not reflect time there. He honorably discharged the service April 5, 1865, nearly nine months beyond his expected discharge date. He is in the company register as "Henry J. Fertig."

He relocated to Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, ca. 1867 and there married Anna Elizabeth Boyd on January 18, 1872, at Granville, fathering Clarence H. (b. 06/??/82). A member of Milwaukee's Wolcott Post No. 1, G.A.R., he died there from a "gastric carcinoma." In his pension file, he is sometimes referred to as "John Henry Fertig" and other times as "John Harrison Fertig," the latter from his death certificate.
