He began work early in life as a messenger and telegraph operator. He then became superintendent and general passenger agent for the Quincy, Alton & St. Louis railroad.
He continued with the railroads, holding executive positions in Chicago with Erie railroad. He also worked in connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Sante Fe railroads. He eventually worked for the Santa Fe as traffic manager, at its headquarters in Amarillo Texas.
He married Mary Marsh the daughter of Judge William Marsh on 7 May 1872. She predeceased him, as did their son, who drowned accidentally. Their daughter with whom Mr. Sweet had resided in later years, survived to mourn his passing.
