My great-great-grandfather Martin Ernst was born in Switzerland in 1842 and died in Houston in 1874.

He immigrated to the United States at age 9 with his parents and two brothers, arriving in New Orleans on December 8, 1851. Immigration records indicate that they lived in the Grand Duchy of Baden prior to their immigration.

The immigration record listed the family as:
Jacob, age 26
Catherine, age 32
Jacob, age 14
Martin, age 9
Carl, age 7

There is some conflict regarding the year of his birth. His death certificate says he was 40 years old at the time of his death, which would make the year of his birth 1834. However, the immigration records are very clear in that he was born in 1842.

In 1869, he and his wife Lena were living in the Brays Bayou area, near Harrisburg in Harris County, Texas, where their son, Robert was born.

His obituary was printed in the Houston Daily Telegraph on August 8, 1874, and simply says, "Martin Ernst, white, aged 40, paralysis." The exact spot of his final resting place, along with thousands of others buried in the Old City Cemetery, has become lost.

His death certificate says he was born in Germany, which in 1874 would have included the Grand Duchy of Baden. The death certificate for his son Robert also says that Martin was born in Switzerland.

He was the husband of Helena “Lena” Adams Ernst and the father of Valentine Ernst and Mattis Robert Ernst.
