The Death Of Dr. George W. Porter
Widely Known Resident of This City for Years Passed Away at Spring Lake
Word reached the city last evening of the death at Spring Lake, New Jersey, of Dr. George W. Porter, for years one of the most prominent residents of Harrisburg. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.W. [Rebecca Riley Porter] Trout with whom he had been residing lately. No announcement of the cause of death or of the funeral services was made.

Dr. Porter, whose wife died some years ago, was a brother of General Horace Porter, former ambassador to France and connected with many families in this part of the State. He is survived by these children: George W. Porter Jr., paymaster of the New York Central Railroad Company; Mrs. W.W. Trout, Spring Lake; Mrs. M.S. Shotwell and Mrs. William B. Hammond, Harrisburg; Mrs. J.M. Poyer, wife of Lieutenant Commander John M. Poyer, United States Navy and Mrs. Thomas G. Hunter, Seagirt.

Dr. Porter was born at Huntingdon, March 9, 1825, of distinguished ancestry, his father being Governor David R. Poter. After attending the Huntingdon School until he was fourteen years of age he took a course at Lafayette College, being graduated in 1846. He was subsequently graduated from the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania in 1850 and at once began the practice of medicine in this city. He practiced here for twenty years and then retired.

President Buchanan appointed him a postmaster in 1857 and Governor Pollock made him a trustee of the State Hospital for the Insane in which office he served for thirteen years. He became a prison inspector in 1883 and ten years later was made secretary of the board, being reappointed until he declined the honor. Dr. Porter was a warm friend of Grant and active in promoting his election to the presidency. Since 1877 he was identified with the work of the Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals and served as a School Director. He was a citizen keenly interested in Harrisburg and eager to promote its welfare.
