Mysterious Dave Mather was a lawman and outlaw on the American frontier. He was the son of Ulysses W. and Lydia Wright Mather, and was born on August 10, 1851. He became a cattle rustler with Dave Rudabaugh and Milt Yarberry in Arkansas in the early 1870s and is known to have been in Dodge City, Kansas in 1872. In 1879, he participated in the Royal Gorge Railroad War in Colorado, associating with Bat Masterson and Doc Holliday. Later that year he became a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In 1883 he became assistant deputy marshal of Dodge City Kansas. The date and place of his death are unknown. By one account, he was killed in Dallas, Texas in 1886. Others claim he went north and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, where he was said to be still living as late as the 1920s.
