Son of Jacob "Frederick" and Matilda Elizabeth Mattern Pretorius. He married Nina Pearl Tarter Combest on October 23, 1942 in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky. They had two children: Nancy Jo Pretorius Moore and Linda Lou Pretorius Helfin.

Ralph Jewett Pretorius, 81, of 5940S 300E, Wabash, IN died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. He was born March 16, 1920 in Wabash County to Jacob Frederick and Matilda (Mattern) Pretorious. He married Nina P. Tarter in Somerset, KY on Oct. 23, 1942.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the SeaBees.

He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Logansport. He retired in 1983 from the State Hospital in Logansport after 22 years, and was a lifelong farmer. He lived in Logansport from 1957 to October 2001 when he moved to Wabash.

Survivors include his wife, Nina, of Wabash; daughters Nancy (Robert) Moore and Lind (Jon) Helfin, both of Wabash; sister, Eunice (Arnold) Bahler of Wabash and a brother Marvin "Mike" Pretorius, also of Wabash; granddaughters Tonja Helfin of Marion, IN, Anne Moore and Abigail Moore, both of Wabash; and grandsons Sean (Molly) Helfin and Alan Moore, both of Wabash; and two great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel, Wabash, with Rev. Tom Cummins officiating. Burial was in Ever Rest Memorial Park located at Logansport. Preferred memorials are to Carey Services, Inc., 2724 S. Carey Street, Marion, IN 46953.
