Evangeline died after a long illness. She married North Carolina writer and historian Burke Davis II about 1964. She began her career as a foreign correspondent for the Atlanta Georgian in Japan just before World War II, sportswriter for the Atlanta Constitution, and first woman sportswriter for a major U.S. newspaper. She co-wrote three books, Amelia Earhart, a biography, Rebel Raider, a children's book about Confederate naval hero Raphael Semmes, and a book about historic Charleston, South Carolina. She was won the women's Southern Golf championship four times in the late 1930s and was a nationally-ranked tennis player who reached the quarter-finals of what is now the U.S. Open. She is survived by her children, Angela Gardner and Burke Davis III, four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Services were held at St. Michaels' Episcopal Church on Canterbury Road in Raleigh.
