Entrepeneur. Owner of the famous Crazy Eddie chain of stores.

Eddie Antar started the chain in 1969 with a store in Brooklyn, New York. The chain grew rapidly during the years when the VCR hit the market. At its height, "Crazy Eddie" had 43 stores in four North Eastern states.

The grandson of Syrian Jewish immigrants, Antar advertised his chain with a series of antic late-night television ads that earned fame beyond the New York metropolitan area.

In 1984, the chain went public. Stockholders took over the company during a revolt in 1987, and shortly after that it was discovered that $45 million in merchandise was missing.

The Crazy Eddie chain was known for its ads featuring a maniacal pitchman (Jerry Carroll, a radio DJ) who touted "Our prices are insane!"

Eddie fled to Israel after being indicted on securities fraud and insider trading charges.

As the probe by the SEC and U.S. Attorney's Office grew, Eddie Antar fled the country in 1990 and remained a fugitive until his arrest in Israel in June 1992.

He and his brother, Mitchell, were convicted of stock fraud in 1993, but their convictions were overturned in 1995 on a finding of judicial bias. Both subsequently pleaded guilty instead of facing retrial and Eddie Antar went to jail. Eddie served seven years in prison, paid $75 million in penalties, and later tried unsuccessfully to reopen the Crazy Eddie chain. Tried to make a movie about his life starring Danny DeVito, but lawyers argued he didn't have the right to sell his story due to an unpaid $1 billion judgment owed to investors.

He was suffering from liver cancer. The "Bloomfield-Cooper funeral home" in Ocean Township New Jersey confirmed the death, but a cause was not given.
