Vivian E. (Swain) Skidmore was born in East Leroy, Michigan to David L. Swain and Edith (Latta).

Vivian excelled academically, attending the Western Normal Teachers College (Western Michigan University) and passing the teaching exam when she was seventeen years old. She could not be issued a teaching license until a year later when she was a legal adult. Her first teaching job was in a one-room schoolhouse near Fulton. She later sought employment in Battle Creek, where she worked at the office at Post Cereals.

Vivian married Stanley Skidmore on February 3, 1928, after he graduated from the University of Michigan. She and Stanley had two children, Gloria J. (Olin) and Gary B. Skidmore.

She was active in the First Congregational Church of Battle Creek and was member of the Mary Chilton Circle, Battle Creek Social Club, Battle Creek Farm and Garden Club, and Battle Creek Country Club.

Vivian enjoyed sharing her knowledge of history, geography, and current events. She was ambidextrous, and was able able to write with both hands (forward and backward) simultaneously. She was an expert at bridge and excelled at gardening.

She passed away eight years after her husband, on April 26, 1998 in Battle Creek.
