First Bishop of the Diocese of Memphis, being appointed on November 12, 1970. He was ordained Bishop on January 6, 1971, and served until July 27, 1982. A champion of civil rights and fairness. A local Peacemaker award is named in his honor. Buried at Calvary at this site in 1985, removed to Immaculate Conception Cathedral.
