When William Jefferson Nikirk was born on November 19, 1837, in Crab Orchard, Kentucky, his father, William, was 33 and his mother, Annie, was 33. William grew up to be a farmer. Between 1850 and 1860, he moved to Daviess County, Indiana.

William J. Nikirk initially enlisted in the Union Army at age 23 on 7 June 1861. He was
discharged on 31 Aug 1861 at Terre Haute, Indiana. He was in the 14th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, Company K, but was discharged for Disability. His rank was Private.

On March 5, 1865, he married his second wife, Almadelia Ann Clark, in Daviess County, Indiana.

He and Delia had four children:
John E. Nikirk 1866–1918
Ella Rosa Nikirk Huntington 1868–1937
Joseph M. Nikirk 1875–1932
Ada Frances Nikirk Daugherty 1882–1938

He died on January 4, 1913, in Washington, Indiana, having lived a long life of 75 years.
