Joseph Alexander's DNA Haplomarker is R1a1. Only 5% of Alexander have this type of DNA. They are NOT related to the other 95% of Alexanders who are R1b1.

Joseph died prior to the 1850 Census. His son James Knox Polk Alexander is living with Joseph's brother Jefferson Alexander in the Henry County, Tennessee 1850 Census. The entire family had moved to Henry County from Union, South Carolina. I do now know what happened to his first wife. His 2nd wife is Flora Shaw.
