Private First Class James Robert Dillon Jr. USMC, 624 Flower Ave., Grove City, died on Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Kuwait. He was 19.

James was born March 9, 1984, in Grove City to James Robert Dillon and Linda Kathleen Whalen.

A 2002 alumnus of Grove City High School, he was involved with the high school audio-visual program and read daily announcements broadcast into each classroom. On Fridays, James prepared and read a top ten list, a light-hearted spoof patterned after David Letterman's comedy routine.

He also was active in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program in Grove City.

He graduated from the Marine Corps Boot Camp on Parris Island, S.C., in September 2002, and from Marine Basic Training in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

James left for Kuwait on Feb. 15, 2003, from Camp Pendleton, Calif., and served as a perimeter guard with the Third Light Armored Battalion of the United States Marine Corps Headquarters Platoon.

He was previously employed at Magoffin Inn, Mercer, and attended Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City.

James was a regular blood donor.

He enjoyed spending time with his friends, who will remember him for his sense of humor.

Marine PFC Dillon was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, California. During his last two years at Grove City Area High School, James made it plain to everyone that his career goal was to serve in the military. He graduated in Spring 2002 and was an above-average student. He was active in Grove City's Big Brother and Big Sister program and was also known for his work in the high school's audio-visual program. James read daily announcements broadcast into each classroom via television hookups and on Fridays, he prepared and read a top-10 list, a light-hearted spoof patterned after David Letterman's. James graduated from the Marine Corps Boot Camp on Parris Island, South Carolina in September 2002, and from Marine Basic Training in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He left for Kuwait on Feb. 15, 2003 and served as a perimeter guard. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, who will remember him for his sense of humor. James gave his Marine buddies his usual warm smile as he excused himself to enter one of the portable toilets that dot this dusty desert encampment some 30 miles from Iraq's southern border. He then locked the door and ended his young life with his M-16 four days after laughingly celebrating his 19th birthday with his Marine buddies.
