The son of Jesse and Susannah Brown Spiers married Jane on 7 April 1841. The union brought ten children. There were eight sons and two daughters. Jesse was a teacher in 1838. He went on to be many things. In 1845 he was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1848 Petersburg Medical College awarded him a medical degree upon his earning a diploma. He furthered his medical knowledge with a degree from the Metropolitan Medical School of New York. Doctor Spiers was also a surveyor and farmer. Jesse Spiers' mother died before he was six years old. His father remarried within a year. With the care of his stepmother and father, Jesse joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at age fourteen. He attended the local schools in Prince George County. He then went on to school in Sussex County and further, to a Classical School in Leasburg, North Carolina. In 1841 he took charge of a school at Tabernacle Church, married his cousin Jane, and farmed. In 1845 he earned his license to preach and assumed the duties at Oak Grove Church. He attended medical school throughout the week in Petersburg, coming home for Saturday and Sunday to preach. By 1848 he had become a doctor. In the 1850s he kept a school at his place of residence while continuing to practice medicine. In 1864 he moved to Salem Church. His was the first burial in that cemetery.
