Born in Caldwell County (later becoming Lyon County), Kentucky to Ransford Smith and Catherine Grave Howard, James served as a corporal in the War Between the States and was a Confederate Veteran. Returning from the War he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Elspa McConnell on 9 Nov 1865. They had 6 children in Kentucky, who are all listed below and linked to their parent's graves.

James and Mary lived near his other brothers and worked as a waggoner for some period of time in the late 1860s and 1870s.

For some reason, in the early 1880s, he and Mary pulled up stakes and moved to Brownwood, Texas following his younger brother, Firman Ransford Smith. After Mary died in 1897 after 34 years of marriage, James met Sarah "Alice" Weed whom he wed in 1899. He enjoyed another 34 years of marriage with her until his death in 1933, at the age of 90.
