McCHRISTY, Dr. Cleo of Brownwood. Age 78. Died 12/14/1971 (Tuesday) in a Brownwood Community Hospital following a 4 months illness. Services held 12/17 (Friday) in Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, Brownwood. Burial in Greenleaf Cemetery. Rev. Leon Aduddell, her pastor, officiated. Wright Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. She was BORN 11/9/1893, nee Cleo Gwendolyn McChristy, the daughter of W.D. and Sallie Ailsie Johnson McChristy in Brownwood. Lifelong resident of Brown County, member of above church for 65 years, taught in various departments and superintendent of the adult Sunday School Dept. for 15 years. She began school in Howard Payne College Kindergarten, finished high school in 1912 and attended Howard Payne College where she received a BA Degree. Taught school from 1916 to 1919 in Brownwood Public Schools, then joined the faculty at Howard Payne College as English professor. Studied at Columbia Univ. in New York, did work on her MA Degree which she later received from Univ. of Texas. Obtained her PhD Degree from Univ. of Texas in 1940 and was head of English Dept. at Howard Payne College until 1969. Member of the Eastern Star, Omega chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and many other professional organizations in Brownwood. SURVIVORS: 2 sisters, Mrs. Tom (Clarice) Green of Fullerton, CA. and Mrs. D.E. (Eugenia) Benter of LaMesa, CA.; 4 brothers, B.B. McChristy of San Diego, CA., Denny J. McChristy of Imperial, CA, William D. McChristy of San Diego, CA. and R.E. McChristy of Palos Verdes, CA.; 8 nieces, 2 nephews and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
