Edwin Mathias Lanners was born on February 10, 1932 in St. Leo, Minnesota to Alex and Regina (Tholkes) Lanners. He was raised on the family farm near St. Leo and attended school there. He received the sacraments at St. Leo Catholic Church. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955.

On June 9, 1953 Edwin was united in marriage to Joan Bauler at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Madison, Minnesota. They made their home on a farm near Clear Lake, SD where he lived throughout the rest of his life. They were blessed with eight children.

Edwin’s passion was farming, he farmed his entire life. His tractor of choice was John Deere, and he collected antique John Deere tractors after his farm sale in 1986. His hobbies included going to farm auctions, watching sale bills, and running for parts for his sons who also farm. He also liked to play cards and go dancing. Another passion of his was regularly attending AA meetings for the past 25 years, where he was known as “Farmer Ed”.

Edwin was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, a member of Charles Curry American Legion, Post #49 of Clear Lake, and a lifetime member of the Catholic Aid Association. Edwin passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at the Sanford Clear Lake Medical Center at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 8 days.
Grateful for having shared Edwin’s life is his wife of 63 years, Joan of Clear Lake; his seven children; Rosalie (Randy) Sanders of Sioux Falls, Gregory of Clear Lake, Beverly (David) Petersen of Sioux Falls, Lois (Mike) Fischer of Goodwin, Douglas of St. Louis, MO, Mark of Clear Lake, and Eric (Robin) of Goodwin; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sister Mary Edwin Lanners, SSND of Mankato, MN, brothers Ralph (Christine) Lanners of Altoona, WI and Dennis (Lynda) Lanners of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, James (Eileen) Bauler of Madison, MN and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Regina; one daughter, Carol Lanners and three sisters-in-law, Marion (Virgil) Hoffman, Delores (Leo) Jelen and Irma (Alvin) Kack.
