Mustered into the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves" on August 2nd 1861 as a First Lieut.of Company F. Promoted to Captain of Company I on January 1st 1863, "New Years Day." On June 1st 1864 during the Battle of Cold Harbor Virginia, Captain Henry Marchant was shot and mortally wounded. He died and was returned for his funeral in Philadelphia, before being transfered to Brooklyn New York for burial in Green-Wood Cemetery.
