Charles Ison was a son of James Ison and Jane Harrison of Amherst County, Virginia. He served as a Lieutenant during the Revolutionary War. The Daughters of the American Revolution list his birth year as 1748. The family surname has been listed in various records as Isham, Isaam, Isom, and Ison.

Charles was married about 1771 to Margaret Ann "Peggy" Taylor. They had four children: James, married Sarah "Sally" Edgerton; Elizabeth "Betsy" married Hugh Turpin; William, married Elizabeth "Betsy" Compton; and John, married Celia New.
