Mary A. Shaffer
--------------------
The death of Mrs. Mary A. Shaffer, (86) years old, occurred at her home, 727 South Manor street, at 11:40 o'clock yesterday morning. She had been an invalid for some time and several days ago her condition grew worse. Death resulted from a complication of diseases. (Breast cancer had spread to her uterus and lungs.)

* Mary Ann married Jeremiah Shaffer on Jan 17, 1863 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester, Maryland. Their son, John Thomas Shaffer, was born 16 months later. A one month old baby, Anna Mary Shaffer, died in 1865. Her tombstone inscription said daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Ann Shaffer. While Mary Ann lists only having one child on later census records, this baby would logically be hers. There is a question of what happened to Jeremiah after that. She is listed in the 1870 census with the surname "Everheart", but then reverts to "Shaffer" later.

She leaves the following brother and sisters: Daniel Armstrong, of Lineboro, Md.; Mrs. Lewis Baughman, of Littlestown (Mt. Joy), Adams county; and Miss Sarah Armstrong of Westminster, Md. Mrs. Shaffer also leaves three grandchildren (Harry Shaffer, Ida Ruby, & Elva) and four (later 5) great grandchildren.

* Mary's only son died 4 weeks before she did. Her grandson, Harry, signed both death certificates. She was listed as a widow to her husband(s), but there is currently no additional information.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon, April 15, at 3 p. m., Rev. J. Kern McKee, officiating. Interment will be made in Greenmount cemetery (next to her son).
