James William “Jay” “J.W.” Barnett D.D.S., 93, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Christian Church of Amarillo with Dick Gray officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Jay was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Groom to Beulah and Ivan Barnett. He graduated from Phillips High School, Texas Tech University and received a dental degree from University of Missouri at Kansas City and a graduate degree from University of Texas School of Orthodontics in Houston. He was the chief dental officer aboard the USS Doyen for the Navy.

Jay was a distinguished lecturer as well as serving as past president of Panhandle District Dental Society, past president of UT School of Orthodontic alumni group, as well as past chairman of Pankey Institute orthodontic department in Miami.

In 1959, Jay opened his orthodontic practice in Amarillo, reaching out to the surrounding towns including, Dalhart, Hereford, Childress and Boys Ranch. Jay loved young people and encouraged many to enter the dental profession. He practiced his beloved orthodontics until he was in his 80s, eventually selling his practice to Dr. Steve Astuto.

Jay loved the game of tennis, helping with others to create T Bar M Racquet Club, bringing in capable coaches for the players. He shared in promoting the YMCA through various programs and activities, including Dr. Ken Cooper, Cooper Aerobics Center of Dallas, with his means of quantifying exercise. Jay helped in promoting a running track for the YMCA and helped promote fitness, when fitness was not cool.

He was described by this friends and associates as, “An inspiration with a passion for friends and work – always with a smile and a word of encouragement – one that brightens our day – when thinking of you causes us to smile – ‘the million dollar smile’ – his great sense of humor – his energy – his desire to share - his wonderful ability to communicate.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evelyn Barnett Ayres; and first born son, Dr. James William Barnett Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou of Denver; his three beloved boys, Dr. Ron Barnett and wife Carrie of Austin, Shon Barnett and wife Cindy of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Kirk Barnett and wife Shannon of Amarillo; his stepsons, Scott Laningham and wife Elizabeth of Austin and Doug Laningham and wife Jill of Fort Worth; a stepdaughter, Suzy Laningham Hamilton and husband Rick of Denver; his granddaughter, Lisa Barnett de Froberville of South Bend, Ind.; his
