Family history indicates that Richard Barry was from County Cork, Ireland. He travelled to the United States where he met and married another Irish immigrant, Mary Wall.

Richard and Mary were wed in Jerseyville, Illinois on October 25, 1861. The 1870 census lists them near Jerseyville with their four oldest children: Hanorah (Hannah), Alice, John, and Thomas.

Sometime after the 1870 census, the family moved to the new town of Morrisonville, Illinois. They settled at a rented house and farm to the northwest, a little beyond the present-day Morrisonville Cemetery.

(Note that Richard and Mary were not buried in Morrisonville Cemetery. They were buried in St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery, south of Morrisonville.)

Records suggest that the last seven of Richard and Mary's children were born at Morrisonville. These were Richard L., Thomas, May, William, Robert, Walter, and James.

Richard and Mary named two of their sons Thomas. The first Thomas died as a child, and the second Thomas was a namesake of the first. In both cases, the son's full given name was probably Thomas Francis Barry.

Richard and Mary both remained at the Morrisonville farm until they died. I do not know the details of Richard's death, but there is a reasonable chance that he died on the farm.

Some of Richard's children eventually took over the work of the farm. Thomas (the namesake), May, Robert, and Walter did not marry, and lived most of their lives in the same rented house.
