Mrs. John Gardner Babcock, 82, one of the oldest residents of the community, died at 6:30 this morning in her home three and one-half miles south of the city in Magnolia township following a year of ill health. She had been critically ill for the past week. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Mrs. Babcock, formerly Miss Mary Hannah Thurman was born July 23, 1858 in her present home where she spent her entire life with the exception of about two years during which time she made her home with her brother-in-law and sister in the parish of St. John, 40 miles north of New Orleans, LA.

Mrs. Babcock was married Jan. 7, 1874 to John Gardner Babcock, Evansville's last surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic, at a ceremony performed by Riley Whitney, justice of the peace for Magnolia township.

The ceremony took place in the Babcock home. Mrs. Babcock's sister, Miss Caroline Elizabeth Thurman, was married to Mr. Babcock's brother, Albert Babcock, in the same house, and the second marriage of Mrs. Babcock's mother was also performed there. The seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Babcock and also two grandchildren were born in the present home.

Mrs. Babcock was the mother of three living sons, Richard Babcock an officer on the Janesville police force; Benjamin Babcock, who resides at home and operates the farm; and Charles Albert Babcock, Los Angeles, Calif. Besides her husband, she is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Babcock was preceded in death, by a son, John, who died in 1897 and by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Greatsinger, who passed Oct. 30, 1937.
