“Abner Forbes Bowen was born at Windsor, Vermont the 4th of July, 1848, and died June 13th, 1920, aged 71 years, 11 months and 9 days.

He moved with his parents to Nebraska City, Neb., when 5 years of age. He attended the public schools until 16 years of age when he joined the Union Army and fought Indians until the war closed. After that, he took several trips across the plains in prairie schooners. He next became a traveling salesman for the Nebraska City Plow Co., until he was 30 years of age. In 1878, he was united in marriage with Nannie Grimm of Nebraska City and moved to Steward, Nebraska, where he bought grain for Duff & Co.

Later, he moved on a large farm belonging to his father, Dr. A. Bowen of Nebraska City, and started the town of Berlin, Neb., having the first store, post office and house in Berlin, carrying on general business such as harness, implements and also shipping stock to Omaha.

In 1893, he came to Wheeling, Mo., where he bought a farm and lived in Livingston County until 1910, when he moved to Wheeling, Mo., the last 10 years. His beloved wife died April 23, 1919. Since then, he had no desire to live, often wishing for death. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for over 40 years and was ready to go when the summons came.

Nine children were born into this home. Six are living, three died in infancy. The living are A.F. Bowen, Jr. of Wheeling, W.F., A.C., and H.E. of St Louis, Belle Phillips of Blythe, Calif., and Addie Campbell of Vesta, Neb.

The great company of people who were present when the funeral service was conducted by the pastor, who was an intimate friend of Bro. Bowen, witnessed the standing and esteem he was held in the community. His body was then laid to rest in the Wheeling Cemetery by the side of his wife. Written by F.J. Smith, Pastor of M.E. Church, Meadville, Mo.” The Chillicothe Constitution, July 6, 1920
