After finishing high school, Jim attended San Jose State University.
He soon began his life-long association with tractors and other heavy equipment working in the parts department of a tractor company in Hollister, CA. In that town he met Margaret Kathleen White and they were married 18 Aug 1939 in Minden, Nevada. Four children were born to them, Judy Ellen, James Randolph, Kathy Margaret and Ronald Edwin.
Jim and family eventually settled in Salinas, CA where he had a very successful career in Caterpillar tractor sales with Pringle Tractor Company. He later worked for Peterson Tractor Company in Santa Cruz and Redding, CA.
Upon his retirement, due to his success, and his polished, personal sales techniques, his peers gave him the honorary title of "Mr. Caterpillar" of California.
