Charles Grady Lawrence, age 90, of Mena, passed away Friday Dec. 15, 2006 in Mena. He was born November 28, 1916 in Polk County, AR, to the late Robert Edward Lawrence and the late Effie Ridge Lawrence.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a carpenter and stone mason by profession. In his retirement years he wrote several books dealing with the people and events of early Polk County. He was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church, and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a loving father, grand-father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Walden of Mabelvale, AR; a son, Charles Lawrence and wife Debbie of Fort Smith; sisters Faye Brewer of Mena, Mary Massey of Buckner, AR, and Corie Roper of Spartanburg, S.C.; a brother, Jesse Lawrence of Mena. Grandchildren include Matthew Lawrence of Raleigh, N.C., Aaron Lawrence of Fayetteville, AR, Andrew Lawrence of Fort Smith, Kim Morriss and husband Chris of Aurora, CO, Brad Long and wife Tisha of Bryant, AR and great-grandchildren, Grady Morriss of Aurora, CO, Ashton Long and Dylan Long of Bryant, AR
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Hazel; infant daughter, three brothers, Odes, Herbert and Holder Lawrence and one sister, Verna.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Mena with Br. Dardanelle Townsley officiating. Interment followed at the Shady Cemetery in Shady, AR. Pallbearers were Matthew Lawrence, Aaron Lawrence, Andrew Lawrence, Brad Long, Chris Morriss, and Arvle Lawrence.
