BISHOP HOYT M. DOBBS METHODIST LEADER DIES AFTER A 2-YEAR ILLNESS. Formerly a Pastor at Central and Troost Avenue Churches Here, He Had Served at S. M. U. and in Brazil.

Shreveport, La.(AP-Dec.6)—
Bishop Hoyt M. Dobbs, 76, retired Methodist bishop, died today at a sanitarium after an illness of two years. He formerly was a member of the Methodist general board of Christian education, and continued to be consulted by leaders of his and other denominations throughout the South. He had held pastorates in Birmingham, Ala., Kansas City, Fort Worth and Anniston, Ala. He was elected bishop in 1922. His first assignment as bishop was in Brazil, with his official residence being at Sao Paulo. He served as deacon of the school of theology of Southern Methodist university from 1916 to 1920.

Bishop Dobbs’s wife died about two years ago. A daughter, a son and four sisters survive. Bishop Hobbs formerly was pastor here of the Central Methodist church, then at Eleventh street and the Paseo, and the Troost Avenue Methodist church, 2536 Troost. The Rev. Raymond B. Kimbrell, pastor of the Westport Methodist church, recalls that when he was licensed in 1910 Bishop Dobbs was a member of the licensing committee. Mr. Kimbrell said he could not recall just how many years Bishop Dobbs was a pastor here, but that Bishop Dobbs had served as secretary of the College of Bishops before the unification of Methodist branches in 1939. Bishop Dobbs was elected Bishop of the old Methodist Episcopal church, South, before the unification.
