In Loving Memory Of
Mother Cornelia Pheloan

Mother Cornelia “Ms Ole Lady” Pheloan started the journey of this world December 2, 1892, over a century ago, in Hamilton, Mississippi as a gift from the heart of God to the late Mr. Cornelius and Mrs. Elsie Whitfield Gholson. Mother Pheloan started her spiritual walk in this life at an early age. She confessed hope in Christ and allowed him to become the center and savior of her life under the leadership of Rev. Chandler at Sulphur Springs M.B. Church, in Hamilton, MS. She was an active member in her church. In the early years she would walk to church, getting there before other members, she would open and clean the church before service. She served as the pastor's usher until her health began to fail. She served in this position with pride and took it very seriously. She was filled with the Holy Ghost on May 4, 1993. In her walked with Christ it was not unusual for Mother Pheloan to walked to revival noonday and night. She was the oldest member of Sulphur Springs Church. Mother Pheloan was united in Holy Matrimony with the late Jimmy Pheloan, who preceded her in death. She was the mother of seventeen children, fourteen of whom preceded her in death. Mother Pheloan was very active in her community. She was a member of the R.C.D.C. for years. When Sulphur Springs had a school, on the last day of school she would cook dinner for the teachers and principal of the school. When someone in the community was sick she would go and cook and clean house for them,
sometime cook Holiday dinner. (Lois remembers her Grandmother: I was eating a sandwich and a dog came up he wanted a piece of my sandwich, I kicked at he dog and said go away, Grandmother said, do you know that it is wrong not to feed anything that is hungry.) The final chapter finished. God laid down his pen. Mother Pheloan's book was closed. Tucked between the pages are her joys, sorrow, suffering and disappointments. When He called her she answered and on Monday morning, February 13, she got up and moved on to a brand new home. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: Three children, Elsie (Cleveland) Shinn, Caledonia, MS; L.C. (Shelia) Lloyd, Chicago, IL; Walter (Rosa) Lloyd, Lignum, VA. 52 grandchildren, 127 great- grandchildren, 115 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
