Jack Edward Schlesinger was born in Santa Rita, New Mexico on February 5, 1928. His parents were Frank J. and Lillian Hunter Schlesinger. The family moved to Ajo in 1936, a few years after the copper mine reopened during the Depression. Jack attended the Ajo public schools, played on the Ajo High School football team and graduated in 1947. He was hired by Phelps Dodge and in due time became a shovel operator at its open pit mine. About 1952 Elizabeth Graves arrived in Ajo and worked as a secretary. Robert met and married "Betty" Graves. Sadly Betty died in 1979. Robert became ill in 1981 and was hospitalized at the Kino Community Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Robert died on April 7, 1981. Funeral services were held at the Ajo Federated church on April 10, with Reverend Olin Lehman officiating. Robert was laid to rest at the Ajo Cemetery. He was survived by his parents, Frank & Lillian, of Tucson and by a sister Mary Jean Richie, also of Tucson.
