MRS. M. OLSON, 72, GRANDVIEW PIONEER, DIES
Martha's father was Bendix Johnson (alt. Bendiks Mathias Johansen), 14 Mar 1835-unknown, and her mother was Tomine Larson (alt. Tomine Lorentse Kirstine Larsdr), 18 August 1850-unknown (photo attached of both of them). They had eight children, the oldest of which was Martha Marie. Bendix was a fisherman with his own boat.

Martha married Ole Anton Olson in 1895 in Kvaefjord, Norway. They had five children in Norway, Magnus, Magna, Lena, Astrid, and Bendix. She left Christiana, Norway, on the S.S. United States, Scandinavian American Lines, 5 April 1907, with her four surviving children, Magnus, Magna, Lena and Astrid. Her son Bendix died in Norway prior to their departure. She arrived at Ellis Island, 16 April 1907 and traveled to Grand View, Wisconsin to meet her husband, Ole, who immigrated there in 1903. She was 4 feet 10 1/2" tall, thin, with black hair and blue eyes upon her entry at Ellis Island. She and Ole made Grand View their home until their deaths. She gave birth to nine more children in Grand View, and sadly, only two of them lived to adulthood, Esther and Alice.

Martha died at a local hospital following a fall outdoors that broke her femur. She was a resident of the Grand View area for 37 years. She was survived by four daughters, Mrs. Alex (Magna) Nehring, Park Falls, Mrs. Frank (Lena) Courtright, Loretta, Wisconsin, Mrs. Donald (Alice) Angelow, Duluth, and Miss Esther Olson, Grand View; one son Magnus, Grand View; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was survived by three sisters, Lovise, Berhandine and Rose in the USA; Kasper, in the USA; and two sisters, Josephine and and Johanna in Norway (full sibling list below).

Funeral services were at the Grand View church at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 20, 1944, with the Reverend Hermann officiating. Internment was at Grand View cemetery near her husband and daughters, Astrid and Tomina. Martha's body was removed from the Pascoe-Erickson Funeral Home Thursday and lied in state at the church from 12:30 until the funeral service began.
