Harriet was the seventh of nine children born to John and Lucy (French) Austin. She was born into a farming family along with Elizabeth born 1807, Maria born 1808, Calista born 1809, Harmon born 1811, James born 1818, Ira born 1819, Phidelia "Della" born 1821 and Sophia born 1828.
About 1845 she married Perry Rufus, son of James and Mary Polly (Brown) Parks. In 1850 Perry was working as a merchant and in later years he did farming.
Harriet and Perry had six children - Mary born 1846, Franklin J. born 1848, Francis P. "Frank" born 1851, George H. born 1855, Rufus born 1857, and Hattie Charlotte born 1863.
Harriet was laid to rest at 57 years old.
