John Hogan was born on April 12, 1824 in Tipperary County, Ireland, to James Hogan and Mary Kelly. On February 28, 1849, John and his brother, Philip, traveled to Liverpool and secured passage to America. They arrived in America early April, 1849. Philip would later travel back to Ireland, discouraged about what he had found in America. John travelled to Ohio in the fall of 1849, working in a quarry outside of Columbus. From there, he moved to Gough's Landing, Mississippi, where he helped build a levee. He met a man named Michael Halpin, a veteran of the Florida war, who sold a 160 acre plot in Iowa to John on March 3, 1855. From there he would move to the Fort Dodge, Iowa area. John Hogan was one of the founders of Fort Dodge which was the first town to be incorporated north of Des Moines. There was no Catholic church in the area at the time, and the Catholics had decided to build a church, a church to become Corpus Christi Catholic Church. John with his team of mules, helped prepare the land and the basement of the church. John Hogan married Mary Williams in that same exact church on August 31, 1857. Their first child to be born was Mary, on June 29, 1858, who was born blind and deaf. The children to follow were: Anna Theresa (1860-1950), Kate (1863-1937), James Joseph (1866-1949), Mararet (1869-1940), John Francis (1871-1957), Nellie (1873-1953) and Patrick Michael (1877-1954). John Hogan would live in the Fort Dodge area for the rest of his life, dying on February 16, 1906 and being buried in Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery.
