See below William in his youth living with his parents.
William E. N. Watkins was enlisted in the Civil War at Butler, Taylor County, Georgia on 4 March 1862 by Capt. Wallace. He served as a private in Company F, 45th Regiment, of the Georgia Infantry. He served until the end of the war when he surrendered with General Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox, Virgina on 8 April 1865.
William Ervin Nathaniel and Mary Mollie Watkins received 100 acres of the Margaret McCowan survey, as a surviving heir to her mother Sarah Ann Hendricks Gamble. They are remembered as the finest of friends, hard workings, clean living, Christians, with a real ability to farm.
