Robert Joseph Bain, who would have turned 93 on October 8, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, October 3, 2016 at his youngest daughter’s home in Bear, Delaware, where he lived for the past two years.
He was born on October 8, 1923 to the late Joseph and Winifred (Hare) Bain in Wilmington, Delaware. A native of Wilmington, Robert graduated from Pierre S. du Pont High School in 1942. He also attended Goldey Beacom Junior College. Robert served in the United States Army during World War II from April 1943 to February 1946, where he participated in the Southern Philippine Campaign with the 361st Antiaircraft Battalion and was discharged as a technical sergeant. In October 1950, he was recalled to active service as an Army reservist and served 14 months with a criminal investigation detachment at Camp George Meade, MD.
Robert joined the Wilmington Bureau of Police on September 4, 1947. During his 20 year career, he served in the Patrol and Detective Division, was promoted to Sergeant and later was in charge of the Vice Squad. On July 1, 1962, he was promoted to Lieutenant and appointed commander of the Traffic Division. His promotion to Captain followed on November 9, 1964 and was later appointed City Police Inspector in charge of Operations. He also attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s narcotics school in Washington, D.C. Following his retirement from the Wilmington Bureau of Police on September 18, 1967, he went to work for the E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in 1968. He first started in the Finance section and was shortly asked to join the Security Department, working his way up to Captain in charge of Building Security.
After retiring from DuPont in 1985, Robert loved to spend time with his family. He always enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories about his days as a policeman, which fascinated his children and grandchildren. Robert was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and family provider. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives. He also enjoyed watching the Phillies and Eagles games, going to casinos - Delaware Park, Dover Downs, Harrah’s, Atlantic City and yearly trips to Las Vegas with his daughters. Sipping on glasses of Merlot over ice, eating a soft pretzel and seeing a smile on his face while playing his favorite penny slots will be forever etched happily in our memories of him.
Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen (Ksiazek); brother, John Bain (Helen); and son-in-law, Joseph Rhodes. He is survived by his loving daughters, Mary Dauphin (Frank), Agnes Rhodes, Deborah Wilson (Sonny); grandchildren, Matthew Dauphin (Shannon), Beth Dauphin, Jeffery Rhodes (Tyler); sister, Winifred Brannon (Dave); step grandchildren, Lauren and Scott Wilson; great grandchildren, Charlotte, Anna, Maggie Dauphin, Ava Rhodes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
