Ruth Mitchell died on Jan. 20, 2010 she was 88. She is survived by her husband, Everett Mitchell of Tigard; daughter, Karen Plestina Lawson of Bend; She was preceded in death by her son, Douglas; and first husband, Fred Joehnke.

Ruth was born Ruth Louise Greunke, June 18, 1921, in Clintonville, Wis. After schooling there, she graduated from Bellin College in Green Bay, Wis., with a degree as a registered nurse. While serving her internship in a Chicago hospital, she met Fred Joehnke of Canby, working on his master's degree at nearby University of Illinois. They married in 1942 at Fort Lewis as Fred was leaving for World War II in Europe. Ruth continued her studies at Oregon State College and OHSU. At war's end Fred began his career at First National Bank of Oregon.

Ruth raised their two children while working at Salem General Hospital and for doctors and clinics in Oregon, concluding her career at Kaiser Permanente in Portland. When Fred retired as personnel director at the bank, they retired to a new home in the Summerfield Community in Tigard. After Fred's death in 1993, Ruth stayed active in golfing, Elderhostel and Philanthropic and Educational Organization (PEO) activities.

In 1996 she married Everett Mitchell, her Summerfield neighbor, and they enjoyed 14 years together golfing, cruising and traveling to the Orient, Mexico and the desert.

Disposition was by cremation in Portland Memorial and inurnment in Tower Garden, Wilsonville. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, in Tigard.
