Sailed to New Zealand in the 'Amelia Thompson', with his brother William Halse (1816-1882). Arrived in New Plymouth in 1841. Began farming, but in 1846 he entered the Civil Service. Licensed interpreter, 1868 and 1882. Husband of Mary Ann Halse (née Shaw; 1831-1894), who also arrived on the 'Amelia Thompson' with her parents. Became a judge of the Native Land Court, and was a Maori scholar.

In loving memory of Arthur Shaw HALSE, died 14 September 1940. Eva Maude HALSE, died 8 April 1941. Lydia Louise BURDEKIN, died 10 July 1944. Adelaide Mary HALSE, died 21 June 1949, sons and daughters of above. In loving remembrance of Evelyn Maude, daughter of Maude Letitia and John Henry HALSE, beloved wife of Athol Ambrose McCAUL, and dear mother of Ian, Jean and Betty, died 26 June 1951, aged 64. Janie, widow of A J MacTAVISH, daughter of H & M A HALSE, born 27 September 1854, died 13 August 1916, and interred in New Plymouth.
