He was the son of Johann "John" Baerg and his wife, Margareta (Hildenbrand) Baerg, who, with their young son Abraham, first came to America, fleeing the religious persecution as Mennonites in Prussia, arriving on August 2, 1875. (John and Margareta are buried in Gnadenau Cemetery in Kansas). Abraham was the Father of Henry Francis Baerg, & Grandfather of Dr. Richard H. Baerg (whom he is holding in the first picture), and Dr. David C. Baerg, John E. Baerg & Robert A. Baerg (the four boys on the couch).
