Joel was born in North Jack Creek, Carbon Co., Wyoming. His parents were James Wesley CONNOR, born May 23, 1951 in Ireland, and his wife Christena ("Tena") Lydia WAGNER.

Sometimes Joel went by the nickname Hop-a-long which was later shortened to Hop.

The family story is that when he was a child, in the late 1890's probably 1896-1898, his mother drove a covered wagon with a wagon train with her parents and children from Laramie, Wyoming to Whittier, Los Angeles Co., California.

Joel owned a nursery and was a contractor in the nursery business in Lordsburg which is now called La Verne in Los Angeles Co., California. He also owned a citrus grove. And he served 3 years in the National Guard.

He lived with and supported his widowed mother in her later years and until she died. He then lived with and supported his sister Ruth CONNOR WOLFE BROCKWAY SHULER for quite sometime until she remarried. Ruth was raising her children and one of her nephews, Lawrence Oral GROSSNICKLE.

Joel married Clara VANDRUFF on Oct. 2, 1933, in Rialto, San Bernardino Co., California. The lived in Ontario, CA and Upland, CA. Clara had been married before to Enos TRIMMER. After Joel died she married a third time to Harry PUTNAM in 1968. She is buried beside her first two husbands: she shares a headstone with Enos TRIMMER; and is buried beside Joel Wesley CONNOR. The three of them are buried in Lot 620 1/2.
